Doctoral studies

The Faculty of Natural Sciences II offers a doctoral degree in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat, Dr. ing or Dr. paed, all equivalent to a PhD) in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or a related discipline after submission of a suitable doctoral thesis (dissertation) and a doctoral examination (defence). Note that in the German system, admission to the doctoral student level requires a Diploma or an equivalent Master degree.

Doctoral studies at our Faculty do not involve the strict course work that accompanies "PhD programs" in the Anglo-Saxon system, where admission is often possible on the Bachelor level. At our faculty, applicants on the Bachelor level need to pass one of our Master programs before entering the doctoral stage.

Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences II are often conducted in the framework of a research project performed in one of the groups at the different institutes. This may embody the possibility to become member of a Graduate School (e.g., within a Research Training Group or a Collaborative Research Centres of the DFG) and pass through a dedicated doctoral training programme. For details, see the Research pages of our Faculty.
