Financial Information

Cost of living:
Martin-Luther-University charges no tuition fees.
However, you will have to provide evidence to the German Embassy in your home country or to the alien registration authority as to how you intend to finance your stay (Finanzierungsnachweis).

To cover your living expanses, you should budget on average for at least € 400 - 600 per month.
accommodation: € 150 - 300
health insurance: about € 55
books and materials for studying: about € 25 - 50
food: at least € 150
Our University semester fee is 56.10 Euro.
It has to be transferred at the beginning of every semester. The semester ticket, using the public transport in Halle (trams, busses, trains), is 60 Euro per semester.
Financial support:
A scholarship or grant may be the answer for those who don't have the necessary financial resources. Various sources of financial support are available.
The contact address for applying for a scholarship is the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Office). The decisive factors in the awarding of support are the academic qualifications and personal suitability of the applicant. Prospective applicants must inquire in their home country!

Housing

Student Hostels Studentenwerk Halle runs 7 hostels (in the city of Halle) with 2345 beds alltogether.
The following types of accommodation are available

  • single rooms (shared kitchen and bathroom)
  • single appartment (built in kitchenette, bathroom)
  • shared appartment (usually double)
  • single room in a community (usually 7 students)
  • shared room in a community

The rent includs heating, water and electricity and is between € 109 and € 198 per month for one person.
In addition, a deposit of about € 150 must be paid. This is returnable on the termination of your contract.

Private accommodation First of all, please keep in mind that private flats offered in Germany are usually not furnished! WG Leuna offers communities near the weinberg campus.
Flats are to be shared by two or three students. Basic furniture is available. The monthly rent is between € 128 and € 168. For detailed information or application, please contact


Health Insurance

As a student, you are eligible for statutory health insurance at the lowest monthly rates, approx. 55 €. This regulation does not apply to students who have spent more than 14 semesters studying or who are over the age of 30.

AOK student service   

To avoid problems with your matriculation, we advise you to sign your insurance police after your arrival in Germany.
Students from European countries may contact us in advance.

The largest public health insurance company is AOK, what we recommend. The Halle branch provides a special student service (speaking English) in the city center.


Language Programs

The “Mediathek” of the Martin-Luther-University offers language acquisition programs, internet access and different types of media to learn or improve language skills.
And all is free of charge. You can study in a nice atmosphere always assisted by an English-speaking tutor if needed. There is the opportunity to meet Germans who might want to learn your mother tongue.
Join the “Sprachpartner”/”Tandempartner” in order to get your German improved.

How To Apply

If you are a full-time student, a teacher or are under 26 years old, you are eligible for an international identity card. Your card will give you proof of identity in over 100 countries worldwide.

Full-time Student
If you are enrolled in full-time studies and are at least 12 years old, you are eligible for the International Student Identity Card (ISIC). You can be in secondary school or in post-secondary studies and there is no upper-age limit for the ISIC.

To apply for the ISIC, you need to present proof that you are currently studying full-time at a recognized institution. This could either be your college or university student ID or a signed letter from your school on official stationary. From then on, wherever you are in the world, all you will need to prove that you are a student is your ISIC
