Rhetoric workshop

Scientific research rarely speaks for its own. Quite normal it is the scientists who informs about his or her research and its key findings. You talk with your boss about your work and how to continue. You present your findings on international conferences, you pitch for a grant or external funding in front of a DGF jury etc. In order to be successful it is important to present your research in a good and convincing way and to address with your language, your argumentation and also your presentation the specific individual needs and expectations of your listeners.

Target audience

Doctoral students and postdocs

Topics

This seminar will help you to present your scientific research in a more convincing and successful way. At the beginning the focus will be on body language, language and voice – key elements to make not only a good first impression but also to talk convincingly about your scientific work. The second part will focus on dialogue situations and especially on argumentation patterns and good rhetoric. Lastly the seminar will address the challenges of giving a speech or a presentation in front of a larger auditorium. The training will be especially about how to give a convincing presentation of your topics, how to interact in a good way with the auditorium and how to deal with questions and critical remarks with consummate ease.

Methods

In the two day seminar a lot of different exercises will give each participant the opportunity to identify personal strengths and also area for improvements. The exercises also allow transferring directly the theoretical seminar content into practical life.
